water damaged ceiling Our goal as your leading water damage restoration company is to prevent your home from experiencing water damage.

The Fall season begins in only 22 days! You know what this means for the Cleveland area. We can expect colder and rainy weather. SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast is here to help you prepare your Valley View, Richmond Heights, Lyndhurst, and surrounding areas home for rainy and colder weather. Our goal as your leading water damage restoration company is to prevent your home from experiencing water damage. We want to make you aware of the major water damage casuses this area in Cleveland experiences so you can know how to prevent them.

5 Main Causes of Water Damage to Cleveland Homes

  • Clogged Gutters
  • Frozen Water Pipes
  • Ice Dams
  • Sewage Backups
  • Drain Backups

Not all of these causes are preventative. The preventative causes in the list above include, clogged gutters, frozen water pipes, and ice dams. First, to prevent water damage caused by clogged cutters, make sure to clean your gutters after a major leaf fall from trees around your Beachwood home. You want to make sure your gutters are clear of debris so they can drain water properly.

You can prevent the water pipes from freezing in your Shaker Heights home by insulating them. This task may seem tedious and time consuming, but when your pipes don’t break and cause water damage, you’ll be very grateful for all of the hard-work you put in.

You may have never heard of ice dams before. An ice dam is an ice build-up on the eaves of sloped roofs of heated buildings that results from melting snow under a snow pack reaching the eave and freezing there. This causes water to back into the building typically through the roof or windows, causing water damage.

It is very hard to prevent water damage from sewage and drain backups. So, SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast suggests contacting your insurance company and making sure you have sewage and drain backup coverage in case you experience these disasters during the Fall and Winter seasons.

If you ever experience water damage and you need immediate assistance, don’t hesitate to call us. Call (216) 464-4498! We are available 24/7 for emergency water damage disasters. For more information, you can visit our Website.

Why Your Garfield Heights Home Floods When it Rains

5/16/2023 (Permalink)

flooded kitchen Next time you experience a drain or sewage back up in your home, call SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast to clean up the disaster.

There could be a few reasons why your home is constantly flooding when it rains. It could be due to poor drainage around the house, a blocked or damaged gutter system, or a plumbing issue. It is best to have a professional inspect your home to determine the cause of the flooding.

To improve drainage around your house, you can start by making sure your gutters are clear of debris and in good working order. You can also install downspouts that direct water away from the foundation of your home. If you have a sloped yard, you can create a swale or a shallow ditch to help direct water away from your home. You can also consider installing a sump pump to help remove excess water from the area.

If you suspect a plumbing issue, you should contact a licensed plumber to inspect your home. They can help identify any issues with your plumbing system and provide solutions to fix them. This could include repairing or replacing pipes, installing back flow preventers, or installing a French drain.

Finally, next time you experience a drain or sewage back up in your home, call SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast to clean up the disaster to look like normal again! Sewage Backup in South Euclid, Yuck!

9/1/2022 (Permalink)

dirty basement floor As industry leaders in water restoration, SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland NE will take care of this nightmare situation.

Sewage backups and water line backups are some of the miserable repercussions of water damage that homeowners or renters can experience.

These backups can happen in several ways, whether it’s a backed-up toilet, water line back up due to flooding, or even a city mishap. Any way it happens, it is water damage that has the potential to be very dangerous. If you are ever in this situation, it is important to know the toxicity of the water damage. It is also important to know who to call to take care of this type of loss in a quick manner.

The first thing you need to know is the categories of water and how they differ:

  • Category 1: “Clean Water” - This is water from source that is considered consumable water, such as from a broken water line or a faucet. This water if left unattended can quickly deteriorate to categories 2 or 3.
  • Category 2: “Gray Water” - This water is where the significant level of contamination begins, if ingested it would cause illness. The primary sources of this category of water is usually from washing machine overflows, toilet overflow with no feces, or a dishwasher overflow. This category of water could contain bacteria or viruses and could quickly deteriorate to category 3 if left untreated.
  • Category 3: “Dark Water” - This water is incredibly unsanitary and will cause severe illness or even death if ingested, and any skin contact should always be avoided. Source of Category 3 could come from any sort of outdoor flooding scenario. Water from beyond the toilet trap (sewage backup) and water that has started to support any mold growth.

As industry leaders in water restoration, SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland NE will take care of this nightmare situation. This is an emergency situation, and we will take care of it as such. We will get your home to look “Like it never even happened.”

  • Category 2 - Water contains significant contamination and has the potential to cause discomfort or sickness. Containments can either be chemical or biological.
    • Example - Discharges from a dishwasher or washing machines.

The Effects of Rainwater on Your Richmond Heights Home

5/17/2022 (Permalink)

rain on umbrella To avoid damage to your home when thunderstorms head your way this Spring, make sure your home is prepared.

Springtime in Northeast Ohio is full of thunderstorms. Rain is common during this time, and it can have multiple effects on the exterior and even the interior of your home.

To avoid damage to your home when thunderstorms head your way, make sure your home is prepared. Below are a few ways you can prepare your Richmond Heights home for thunderstorms:

  • Prepare Your Roof - Patch up any loose shingles on your roof. Do not wait too long to replace your roof if it is time for a new one. Damages that can occur are likely to be more costly than a new roof!
  • Clean Your Gutters - Clogged gutters can cause water to seep into your home. When water gets into your home it can cause damage to your walls, ceiling, floors and more.
  • Waterproof Your Basement - If you have a basement, make sure it is waterproofed! If it is not waterproofed, you are much more susceptible to floods in your basement. This damages not only the basement walls and floors, but also the contents, costing thousands in damage.

mold on siding of home After winter has ended and spring has come, you may notice mold and other types of growth beginning to form on your home.

After winter has ended and spring has come, you may notice mold and other types of growth beginning to form on your Bratenahl home.

The mixture of dampness and warmth creates growth that is usually best cleaned off by the method of pressure washing! The best time to pressure wash is between the months of March and November.

We suggest pressure washing as soon as possible in the springtime. The sooner you pressure wash the growth that is on the home, the sooner you eliminate other problems arising from that growth.

  • Flash Flooding
  • River Flooding

  • Dam Breaks

How Significant Foods Were Caused

Below are the significant floods that occurred in Ohio:

  • Shadyside Ohio Flooding 1990: “A deadly flash flood occurred in eastern Ohio near the town of Shadyside on the evening of June 14, 1990. Over 3 inches of rain fell along Pipe and Wegee Creeks in under 2 hours.”
  • Independence Day Flood of 1964: “Thunderstorms moved onshore from Lake Erie on the evening of July 4, 1969. Preparing Your University Heights Home for an Extended Absence

9/2/2021 (Permalink)

Inside the water damaged Pepper Pike Estate Residential Water Damage in Pepper Pike

If you are preparing to leave your University Heights home for an extended amount of time, you should follow some simple guidelines to prepare your home for your absence:

* Check the security alarm

* Seal boxes of food or dry goods

* Invest in a programmable thermostat

* Put the water heater in vacation mode

* Unplug electronics

* Stop or forward mail

* Set up lights on timers

* Turn off water supply

Turning off your water supply can be key, especially in the winter months.  A pipe could burst causing astounding water damage to your Lyndhurst home. We had a residential client call us in February 2021 overwhelmed with his newly purchased Pepper Pike estate that was a victim of a pipe burst before he could fully move into the house.  With over 90% of the house engulfed in water damage, our team of responders arrived at the home with a drying plan in place and ready to work!

Water in Your Cleveland Heights Laundry Room?

8/6/2021 (Permalink)

Though they are a necessity, washing machines need to be regularly maintained and inspected in your Newburgh Heights home. Each washing machine comes with three hoses to add total functionality to the appliance: hot water, cold water and a drain. This means there are three opportunities for your otherwise reliable appliance to suddenly break apart and leak water. If you find water in your Mayfield Heights home laundry room, it’s worth checking to see if any of your washing machine hoses are leaking.

First and foremost, pull out the washing machine. Check all three hoses to see if there is a leak in any of them, but do not disconnect any tubes. Instead, start a short wash and watch each of the hoses as it goes through the wash and rinse cycles. When starting the drain cycle, keep an eye on the drain hose.

If your South Euclid home's washing machine hose has a mind of its own and floods your laundry room, call SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast at 216-464-4498 and let us make it "Like it never even happened."®

The Dos and Don’ts of Flood Damage in Richmond Heights

5/15/2021 (Permalink)

DO remove excess water from your Valley View home. This can be done by mopping, blotting, or wet/dry vacuum.

DO remove and dry any wet cushions, fabrics, and wood furniture.

DO collect all loose items off the floor and dry them away from the flooded areas.

DO turn air conditioning on in the summer to increase drying potential.

DO put aluminum foil between furniture legs and any wet carpeting or rugs.

DO remove rugs, if possible, and hang or lay them to dry away from flooded areas in your Cuyahoga Heights home.

DON’T use ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet.

DON’T utilize electronic household appliances. Electrocution can occur.

Sewage Restoration in Cleveland: What You Should Know

5/15/2021 (Permalink)

Sewage backups can be very hazardous, as this water is unsanitary and contains dangerous bacteria. There are three main types of sewage (contaminated) water: “clean water”, “gray water”, and “black water”. Our team at SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast are highly trained in inspecting contaminated water to determine its type and planning a safety response accordingly.

“Clean Water”: water from a clean source, such as a faucet. However, if left untreated, it can turn into “gray water” or “black water” depending on time, temperature, and contact with other contaminants in your Mayfield Heights home.

“Gray Water”: water with a moderate level of contamination. This water would cause illness if ingested, and is typically from washing machines, toilets, or dishwashers. And just like the “clean water”, if left untreated, it can turn into “black water” depending on time, temperature, and contact with other contaminants in your Brooklyn Heights home.

“Black Water”: with an extreme amount of contamination that could cause severe illness or death if ingested. This water is typically from rivers/streams, toilets with feces, or standing water with microbial growth. Any contact with water of this sort should be avoided and kept away from all residents in your Pepper Pike home.

If you have any sewer water damage emergencies, call SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast at 216-464-4498 as quickly as possible to avoid damage or illness. We’ll make it “Like it never even happened.”

Water Damage Can Lead to Mold in Your Shaker Heights Home

4/8/2021 (Permalink)

With “April Showers” quickly approaching, there is an increased possibility for drain backups in your Bratenahl home. Water damage is horrible in itself but it CAN get worse. Unfortunately, water damage can lead to mold.

Given the right environment, mildew and mold can develop within 48 hours of water exposure if your Richmond Heights home has sustained water damage. This buildup of water can be due to a number of things, including:

  • Flooding
  • Sewage backup from flooding in the area
  • Overflows from showers, sinks, or bathtubs
  • Elevated levels of humidity from foundation leaks
  • Plumbing and/or roof leaks

Mold will continue to grow until the source of the water in the specified area has been corrected, the atmosphere is under control along with dealing with the existing mold properly and effectively.

Eliminating all mold is not possible indoors, but there are many ways that you can help to control mold growth, such as:

  • Stop the Water – have leaks and water intrusions repaired.
  • Keep it Clean – clean fabrics regularly and store in dry spaces; have air ducts cleaned.
  • Keep it Dry – reduce air moisture with dehumidifiers, fans, air conditioners, but DO NOT use fans if mold already exists; try to keep indoor humidity below 40%
  • Disinfect – be sure to check moisture or mold prone spaces in your Shaker Heights home like bathrooms, laundry areas, mechanical rooms for moldy odors, and use a commercial disinfectant.

Water damage can lead to problems that can be easily missed or shrugged off as not a big deal. It is important to have the affected space thoroughly assessed by experts for signs of mold growth. That’s where we come in! Call SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast at 216-464-4498 and we’ll make it “Like it never even happened.”

September is National Preparedness Month, Prepare Your Valley View Home!

9/22/2020 (Permalink)

National Preparedness Month was introduced by FEMA back in 2004 and encourages Americans to be prepared for natural disasters and other emergency situations. This new implementation was an outcome of the tragedies America experienced on September 11, 2001. There are many ways to prepare for emergency situations. According to the American Red Cross’ “Emergency Kit Check List”, here are some thing to pack in your at-home emergency kit in case of any natural disasters in your Pepper Pike area.

  • Water: three-day supply, one gallon per person per day
  • Food: Choose foods that don’t need to be refrigerated or cooked; high-protein such as energy bars, ready-to-eat soups, and peanut butter.
  • Tools: utensils, can opener, napkins, multi-purpose tool, work gloves.
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First-aid kit
  • Radio or mobile device (battery or alternative-powered)
  • Personal Items
  • Medications: prescription and over-the-counter medications
  • Clothing, shoes, and blanket
  • Sanitary supplies: toilet paper, diapers, feminine supplies and personal-hygiene items.

  • Family contact information
  • Pet supplies
  • Multi-purpose tool, such as a Leatherman, and work gloves
  • Comfort items, such as toys, games, family photos

Another important thing to remember is to make sure you and your family have a plan of action to escape your Garfield Heights home. Conduct a fire drill at least twice a year. Have a designated meeting spot in a safe area away from the home. Teach all family members escape plans for a variety of situations.

Water Losses in the Cleveland Area

5/16/2020 (Permalink)

Water damage can be extremely dangerous to your Brooklyn Heights home, so save yourself some time and initiate a preloss relationship with SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast. The quicker this issue is taken care of and restored, the safer you and your family are. A storm causes water damage, water damage causes mold, and mold causes rotting in your home!

Microbial growth can be dangerous to your Mayfield Heights home and its contents. If you notice an increase in humidity in your home before any growth has occurred, a dehumidifier may be all you need to help prevent moisture build-up. Some leaks are more harmful than others. Category 1 leaks, such as those that come from your supply lines, are not immediately harmful and can be taken care of without too much of a health concern, as long as it’s done in a timely manner. However, Category 2 or 3 from plumbing that removes waste from your home could be dangerous and should be taken care of as soon as possible with attention to the safety process of the mitigation. A multitude of bacteria and viruses live in this water and can grow anywhere in your home that the water touches. Furthermore, flood water from the ground is also a concern as it can carry sewage, chemicals, and infectious diseases. If you happen to come into contact with this type of loss, be sure to wash your hands and any materials that have touched the loss appropriately to protect yourself.

The best way to stay safe is to be prepared. Do not hesitate to call a professional, that’s what we are here for! You and your family’s safety is very important to us. The quicker that flooded areas on your Garfield Heights home are cared for by a professional, the more likely you are to be out of harm's way. If you have suffered damage from water or other disaster at your home or business, call SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast at 216-464-4498.

Avoiding Water Damage to Your Cleveland Heights Property While On Summer Vacation in Cancun

5/16/2020 (Permalink)

The worst time for water damage to occur is while you aren't at home or in the Cleveland area, as you have no control over the destruction that may occur. Directly from Abbotts, here are some helpful tips to keep your Newburgh Heights area protected from any water damage while you are enjoying your summer vacations.

Before you leave:

-Inspect your home for leaks or rusts in pipes, water heaters, windows, doors, roofs, and hoses.

-Clean out your gutters of debris to prevent water pooling and damage.

-Shut off water supply, whether at the main valve or at the most frequent offenders (toilets, refrigerators, and washing machines).

-Install and test your Sump Pump annually.

Basement Flooding Safety in Your Cuyahoga Heights Home

4/9/2020 (Permalink)

Northeast Ohio has gotten an excess amount of rainfall recently, which means the risk for flooding has increased as well, especially in your Cleveland basements. Flooding can impact your family’s health and the foundation of your Newburgh Heights home if it is not handled quickly and efficiently. It can seep into wires in walls and, because it is a conductor, this water can pose safety risks. Floods can happen in basements due to:

  • Blocked sewer pipes
  • Heavy rainfall
  • Storm or sanitary sewer backup
  • Drainage failure

But have no fear – SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast is here! We specialize in Flooded Basement Cleanup and Restoration anywhere in your Cleveland area! We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and our Technicians are highly trained in water restoration techniques. Give us a call at 216-464-4498 for all flooding and water restoration needs!

Preventing Water Damage on Your Cleveland Property

1/24/2020 (Permalink)

The best protection against catastrophic water damage is shutting off the main valve that controls all the water for your Garfield Heights home. Everyone in your Lyndhurst home should know where the main water shutoff valve is located so they can stop the water in an emergency. Before you leave your home, you will want to shut off the main water line to prevent any chance of water damage while you’re away. Many water meter setups have two valves, one on the street side of the meter and one on the house side.

If you live in a colder climate, you will typically find the main shutoff in the basement near the front of the home. In warmer climates, it may be outside your Mayfield Heights home attached to an exterior wall or in an underground box with a removable lid.

If you don't remember to shut off your water and come home to a mess, remember SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast is here 24/7 to help! Call us anytime at 216-464-4498.

Celebrate National Preparedness Month with SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast

This is a direct result of the tragedies our country experienced on September 11, 2001. SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast believe this is a fantastic idea!

There are many ways to prepare for emergency situations. Below you will find The American Red Cross “Emergency Kit Check List” to assist you in your preparation.

  • Medications: prescription and over-the-counter medications

wtr Is this water safe to walk in?

December in Cleveland, OH

12/7/2018 (Permalink)

It’s December in Newburgh Heights and so far we have had both snow and rain, which equals lots of water! We are also experiencing freezing cold temperatures, which can ultimately lead to frozen or broken water pipes.

To avoid any catastrophe in your Pepper Pike home, it is extremely important to ensure that your heat is on and at a moderate temperature that won't allow pipes to freeze, especially if you are leaving your Valley View home unattended for any amount of time. If a pipe were to break, the effects can be devastating. Often, the amount of water needs more than just a mop or a rag and cleaning up the visible water may not be enough. The floor, subfloor, walls and ceiling can be holding water you are unaware of and unable to dry without professional help.

If you or someone you know experiences water damage, our team of trained professionals at SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast are at your service! Call us today at 216-464-4498.

Water Damage Can Lead to Mold in Your Valley View Home

5/25/2018 (Permalink)

As we have seen recently, thunderstorm season is upon us. With these storms comes increased possibility for drain backups in your Pepper Pike home. Unfortunately water damage is bad enough but if left for too long, it can cause another problem...mold.

Mildew and mold will develop within 24-48 hours of water exposure if your University Heights home has sustained any type of water damage due to:

  • Flooding
  • Sewage backup from flooding in the area
  • Overflows from showers, sinks, or bathtubs
  • Elevated levels of humidity
  • Plumbing and/or roof leaks

Worse still, that mold will continue to grow until the source of the water in the area has been stopped and repaired, and the existing mold is dealt with properly and effectively. While there are thousands of types of mold that exist, some are known for being allergens, and some serious health problems can be caused by a few molds that produce harmful toxins. All molds however, are capable of affecting your health in certain conditions and higher concentrations.

Even lesser amounts of exposure for certain people, especially infants, children, immune-compromised patients, pregnant women, those with preexisting respiratory conditions, and the elderly can produce adverse health effects.

Preventing or eliminating all mold and mold spores is unavoidable indoors, but there are several ways in which you can help to control mold growth, such as:

  • Stop the Water – have leaks and water intrusions repaired
  • Keep it Clean – clean fabrics regularly and store in dry spaces; have air ducts cleaned
  • Keep it Dry – reduce air moisture with dehumidifiers, fans, air conditioners, but DO NOT use fans if mold already exists; try to keep indoor humidity below 40%
  • Disinfect – be sure to check moisture or mold prone spaces in the Beachwood house like bathrooms, laundry areas, mechanical rooms for moldy odors, and use a commercial disinfectant

Most importantly, call in the experts to help! Water damage can easily lead to bigger problems than just a little water puddle. It is important to have the space affected thoroughly assessed for signs of mold growth immediately to prevent possible health infractions or further damage to your Mayfield Heights home.

SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast is here to help with all of your water damage questions. Call today us today at 216-464-4498.

FEMA and Mitigation in the Cleveland Area

4/6/2018 (Permalink)

What does FEMA have to say about mitigation? Read on to find out...

“Effective mitigation requires that we all understand local risks, address the hard choices, and invest in long-term community well-being. Without mitigation actions, we jeopardize our safety, financial security and self-reliance.

·         Disasters can happen at anytime and anyplace; their human and financial consequences are hard to predict.

·         The number of disasters each year is increasing but only 50% of events trigger Federal assistance.

·         FEMA's mitigation programs help reduce the impact of events—and our dependence on taxpayers and the Treasury for disaster relief.

FEMA's Federal Insurance and Mitigation Administration (FIMA) manages the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and implements a variety of programs authorized by Congress to reduce losses that may result from natural disasters. Effective mitigation efforts can break the cycle of disaster damage, reconstruction, and repeated damage. FEMA's mitigation and insurance efforts are organized into three primary activities that help states, tribes, territories and localities achieve the highest level of mitigation: Risk Analysis, Risk Reduction, and Risk Insurance. Through these activities and FEMA's day-to-day work across the country, communities are able to make better mitigation decisions before, during, and after disasters.”

Spring 2023 Arrives and So Do Thunderstorms in the Cleveland Area

3/18/2018 (Permalink)

Spring season has arrived in Northeast Ohio.  There are many terms issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) you will here on the radio or TV.  News Net 5 posted on their website a guide that defines these terms.

“SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH - Severe weather has the potential to occur. You should *watch out* for bad weather to happen. Watches are typically issued before any thunderstorms develop, and are issued for a longer period of time (6-8 hours on average).
While a Watch does not mean bad weather will happen for sure, it means the conditions could rapidly change and the atmosphere is primed for severe weather. This could mean things like hail, straight-line wind gusts and even flooding.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING - This is your call to action, to do something. Severe weather has been spotted or about to happen and it could impact you. Warnings cover a smaller geographic area and are usually only issued for small chunks of time (on average, 20-30 minutes).”

Some Prevention Tips For Burst Pipes While On Vacationing Outside of Beachwood

3/10/2018 (Permalink)

Prevent Burst Pipes

Broken pipes can be difficult to fix, and the damage can be costly. It’s best to keep this issue from ever happening. If you’re traveling out of town for an extended period of time, specifically during the winter, there are several steps you can take to prevent your Valley View home from being flooded:

• Don’t turn down the heat too far. If you keep the heat on, even if you turn it lower than if you were home, it can keep your pipes warm enough to prevent them from freezing.

• Keep the water running. You don’t have to run the water on full. If you allow the faucet to drip, this helps relieve the pressure in your water system, possibly eliminating water pipe repair.

• Wrap the pipes. If you wrap pipes, especially those that are exposed, with towels or blankets, it provides extra insulation against the elements.

Keep an Eye on Your Lyndhurst Home From a Distance

If you’re going to be gone for several days, especially during the coldest parts of winter, it’s not a bad idea to have a neighbor, family member or friend stop by the house once in a while. This can be just a quick peek inside to verify there is no flooding or a broken pipe, or checking the thermostat to make sure plenty of warm air is circulating in your empty Beachwood home.

You can also use video cameras that you can view from your phone or computer to check on your home. This won’t prevent a pipe from bursting, but it can allow you to at least get a professional there to do a water pipe repair sooner and prevent further damage.

If you or someone you know experiences a devastating pipe burst in your home, SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast is at your service! Call us today at 216-464-4498.

Preventing Frozen Pipes in Cleveland Heights, Ohio

12/5/2017 (Permalink)

It's that time of year and the temperatures are dropping in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Click this link for a few tips from the Red Cross to help prevent frozen pipes!

1) Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.

 2) Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.

 3) When the temperature is very low outside, let the cold water drip from faucets served by exposed pipes or pipes in exterior walls. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing because the temperature of the water running through it is above freezing.

 4) Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent damage if pipes freeze and burst.

 5) If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55ºF.

SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast is here 24/7 if you need our help. Call us today 216-464-4498! We extend our services throughout the Cleveland area including, but not limited to: Shaker Heights, Euclid, and Pepper Pike.

How to Preserve your Important Documents from a Storm in Cleveland, OH

9/9/2017 (Permalink)

In large storms or any type of water flood in your South Euclid home, there's a few things you can do to protect important documents.

First and foremost utilize simple household items like sealable sandwich bags. They will protect documents from water. You can keep anything you deem important in these and just use them from the bags. This way you're prepared if an unexpected flood occurs to your Valley View home.

If a storm is coming, you can use your dishwasher for important documents. The dishwasher has the ability to lock water in or out and because it is attached to cabinets, it is less likely to be destroyed in events like tornadoes or hurricanes.

Here's what our friends at WRAL News are saying about which documents are important to safekeep:

  • Driver's license, photo ID
  • Emergency contact list or address book (even if contacts are stored in a smartphone)
  • Insurance policies (health, home, auto)
  • Vital documents (birth certificates, passports, wills)
  • Bank account information (account numbers, passwords)
  • Photocopies of credit and debit cards (front and back)
  • Stock certificates, investment information
  • Extra keys (home, safe deposit box, office and car)"

If you or someone you know experiences storm damage to your Garfield Heights home, contact SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast at 216.464.4498 today!

What is a Flood Cut in Your South Euclid Home?

8/27/2017 (Permalink)

What is a flood cut?  Removing the bottom 12-24 inches of drywall in a flood affected room.

Why Do We Flood Cut?

·         If we detect wet insulation

·         The water is contaminated from the sewage or other storm related contaminates

·         If any microbial growth is detected

After the lower wall portions are removed, any studs or framing are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Once the walls are completely dried out new insulations can easily be installed and the finalization of the build back can continue.

Some of our steps:

The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. We use powerful pumps and vacuum units to quickly remove hundreds or thousands of gallons from your property, which helps prevent secondary water damage and mold growth.

We use specialized equipment to remove the remaining water that is harder to access. Our Professionals will use room measurements, temperature, and relative humidity to determine the optimal number of air movers and dehumidifiers needed to dry your home or business.

If you or someone you know experiences flooding in their home, call SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast today at 216.464.4498! We extend our services throughout the Richmond Heights, Lyndhurst, and Shaker Heights area.

How We Fix Water Damage to Your Bratenahl Home PART ONE

8/20/2017 (Permalink)

What can SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast do to help water damage in your South Euclid residence? Here is some basic information from a very reliable source...Wikipedia!

"Structure and contents

When working within a residence, it is often the case that those who are performing the water damage restoration must work with and around the contents of the home. This includes, but is not limited to, furniture, electronics, books, and any other materials that may have been affected by the water damage. The moving around of the said contents is often referred to "contents manipulation." Water damage restoration firms often bill content manipulation on a per hour basis.

Contents may also require treatment due to the effects of water damage. This may include, but is not limited to, sterilization, sanitization, deodorization, drying, and storage of said contents. Other contents may simply be unsalvageable, or the cost of having them salvaged would exceed its current value."

If you experience water damage to your East Cleveland home or Pepper Pike commercial property, call SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast today at 216.464.4498!

How We Fix Water Damage to Your Bratenahl Home PART TWO

8/20/2017 (Permalink)

You may be wondering what comes next? After we assess the damage, remove any contents, treat any material being left etc. The next step in the process is called Monitoring. What exactly is that? Read below!

"After the water has been extracted and any non-salvageable materials have been removed, water damage professionals should place drying equipment according to industry guidelines for capacity in the affected areas. Industry standards state that drying vendors should return to the residence at regular time intervals, preferably every twenty-four hours, to monitor the equipment, temperature, humidity, and moisture content of the affected walls, contents, or other affected materials. Should one area be dry and another affected area still wet, the firm will relocate or remove equipment accordingly."

How We Fix Water Damage to Your Bratenahl Home PART THREE

8/20/2017 (Permalink)

After the stage called 'Monitoring' the next phase is the completion phase. What is the monitoring phase? Let's ask our friends at Wikipedia:

"Completion

Once temperature, humidity, and moisture content are deemed acceptable according to industry standards, drying equipment is removed and the drying process is complete. There are defining criteria and methods to be used for assessing water damage and establishing restoration procedures, but because of the unique circumstances of every water damage restoration project, it is impractical to issue blanket rules that apply to every situation. In extenuating circumstances, deviation from standard practices is appropriate."

Though all of this information may seem daunting, don't worry! SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast are here for you and we can be here for you 24/7, give us a call today at 216-464-4498! What is Water Backup and What Does it mean for my Shaker Heights Home?

8/11/2017 (Permalink)

Water backup can happen at anytime, anyplace, even if it's super inconvenient! Water can be extremely damaging to your home, it's much more than just a puddle. Let's see what a trusted insurance company, Liberty Mutual, has to say about water backup:

“Water backup occurs when the water around the foundation of your home exceeds the capacity of removal systems to drain it. It can occur from surface water seeping into foundation walls or sewer systems overflowing up through drains in the basement.

Preventing Water Backup

Maintain gutters and downspouts, keeping them free of debris and leaves and repairing them if they are sagging

Inspect your gutters' capacity - after fifteen minutes of heavy rain, if water overflows the gutters, install additional downspouts

Extend downspouts at least ten feet away from the house

Adjust landscaping and irrigation so that water flows away from the foundation”

Call SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast today at 216-464-4498, we're always here to help! Let our professional team do the cleanup with the proper procedures to keep you, your Pepper Pike home, your University Heights small business, and Euclid commercial property safe.

Your drywall is wet?! Oh no!! Now what?!

7/21/2017 (Permalink)

The problem with water getting into drywall is that drywall does not dry on its own very quickly. When this happens mold can start to grow which would require professional service. If you notice that your drywall is wet the key to minimizing the damage is to act quickly. Let SERVPRO help! “When drywall gets wet one of the first things that can happen is mold feeding on the soggy paper “skins”.  As the moisture finds its way deeper in to the material, the gypsum begins to soften and eventually turn to mush…or crumble away. It does not take much water or much time for this to occur.  I have seen mold happen after just one “flooding” type event in a mater of days.” (networx.com)

The best thing you can do if your drywall is wet is to give us a call. We can dry it much faster to limit the damage as much as possible!

Unexpected Water In Your Basement?

7/14/2017 (Permalink)

https://www.statefarm.com/simple-insights/residence/flooded-basement-how-to-deal-with-common-causes

State Farm Insurance posted on their website the following on unexpected water in your basement?

“If the water is coming up through floor drains or sink drains in the basement, then the problem is often water backing up from the municipal sanitary sewer system. During heavy rains, combined sewer systems can become overwhelmed with water. This can cause sewer water to back up in the system and sometimes into homes.

There are other possible explanations, too. Sewer backups can be caused by individual service lines being plugged by grease, waste, tree roots, breaks in pipes or saturated ground. Sewer mains can also be plugged by vandalism or large items dropped down manholes.

This kind of flooding is an enormous problem for homeowners, as it's largely out of your control and probably means fecal waste backing up into basements. Not only is it disgusting, but it can also be a serious health hazard.

In order to keep your individual lines clear, you can install backflow preventers that help stop sewer water from flowing backward into the house. Proper maintenance of your individual lines - for example, pouring tree root killer down your toilets once a year - can also go a long way in preventing sewage backups. Still, the problem is often out of your control.

Sewage in your basement means a major cleanup and a lot of uncertainty about future problems. If it's something you've seen in your home, you'll have to get your city government involved. At the very least, be aware of the problem and don't leave anything valuable near your downstairs drains.”  To read this information and more on flooded basements, click this link: https://www.statefarm.com/simple-insights/residence/flooded-basement-how-to-deal-with-common-causes

Some Facts About Floods

7/12/2017 (Permalink)

“A flood occurs when water overflows or inundates land that's normally dry. This can happen in a multitude of ways. Most common is when rivers or streams overflow their banks. Excessive rain, a ruptured dam or levee, rapid ice melting in the mountains, or even an unfortunately placed beaver dam can overwhelm a river and send it spreading over the adjacent land, called a floodplain. Coastal flooding occurs when a large storm or tsunami causes the sea to surge inland.

Most floods take hours or even days to develop, giving residents ample time to prepare or evacuate. Others generate quickly and with little warning. These flash floods can be extremely dangerous, instantly turning a babbling brook into a thundering wall of water and sweeping everything in its path downstream.”

Finding The Source Of A Ceiling Leak

5/30/2017 (Permalink)

Ceiling leaks are unsightly, but there can be a much bigger issue that lies beneath the surface. “Identifying the source of a ceiling leak is similar to putting together a puzzle. You might think it's simple enough, but finding where water is coming into the home may be an exercise in trial and error. Where the water enters the home may not be at the source of the leak. Water follows the easiest path until it reaches the lowest point or obstruction along that path where it begins to pool and leak. A thorough inspection and eliminating the most obvious causes is a good starting point when you want to identify the source of the leak in your ceiling.”

Check Your Toilet For Leaks

4/24/2017 (Permalink)

“If you have a heavy leak in your toilet, it's easy to diagnose—the faint sound of the toilet tank constantly replenishing is a dead give away. What about a slow leak? Diagnose it with food coloring.

If you have a slow leak in your toilet tank, hundreds of gallons are just slowly and silently cascading down the side of your toilet bowl every month. Fortunately you can easily detect if the uptick in your water bill is from a slow leak or not.

Over at wikiHow they share a simple test for toilet water leaks, place a half dozen or so drops of food coloring in the toilet tank. Leave the toilet alone for a half hour or more. Come back and check to see if the water in the bowl of the toilet has become tinted with the food-coloring dye from the tank.”

Check Your Washing Machine Hose Lately?

4/20/2017 (Permalink)

“Each washing machine comes with three hoses to add total functionality to the appliance: hot water, cold water and a drain. This means there are three opportunities for your otherwise reliable appliance to suddenly break apart and leak water. If you find water in the laundry room, it’s worth checking to see if any of your washing machine hoses are leaking.

First and foremost, pull out the washing machine. You need to check all three hoses to see if there is a leak in any of them, but don’t disconnect any tubes. Instead, start a short wash and watch each of the hoses as it goes through the wash and rinse cycles. When starting the drain cycle, keep an eye on the drain hose.”

Water Damage-Common Inside Sources

4/10/2017 (Permalink)

There are many areas inside and outside your home that can cause water damage.  According to State Farm Insurance, here are a few inside sources:

•Look for signs of existing leaks on ceilings, walls, floors and near appliances that use water. •Methods to avoid damage due to freezing include insulating exposed pipes, utilizing heat tape in areas which can’t be insulated, and running a trickle of water out of faucets when the business is closed and the water is not being used during periods of freezing or below freezing temperatures. •Avoid putting any solids or grease down your drains, and use screens on your drains to catch solids before they enter the plumbing system. •Ensure hose connections are secure and water supply lines are not brittle or worn for appliances such as washing machines and icemakers. •Apply fresh caulk around all fixtures and exterior openings such as doors, windows and fixtures. •It is recommended that all appliances and mechanicals be regularly serviced by licensed contractors to ensure there are no leaks, wear and tear or blockages which may cause water damage”

Deductible Questions

3/21/2017 (Permalink)

When SERVPRO of Beachwood is called to a home or business to clean up from a broken pipe, water back up, roof leak or mold clean up (just to name a few examples), sometime there is a deductible to collect.  What exactly is a deductible.  We went to the Farmer Insurance website for a explanation.

"What is a deductible?
A deductible is the amount you’re responsible for in the event of a covered loss. In most covered loss cases, you are responsible for any amounts up to your deductible level and your insurance would cover anything beyond that up to your coverage limit. For example, if you select a $1,000 deductible and have a $4,200 covered loss, you would receive a claim payment of $3,200 after deducting the $1,000.

A homeowners deductible applies to each claim. If you have more than one claim in a policy period, you will be responsible for the deductible amount for each individual claim regardless of the number of claims you have during that policy period." (Source: http://www.farmers.com/faq/home/#deductible)

Preventing Water Backup

1/6/2017 (Permalink)

“Water backup occurs when the water around the foundation of your home exceeds the capacity of removal systems to drain it. It can occur from surface water seeping into foundation walls or sewer systems overflowing up through drains in the basement.

Preventing Water Backup

  • Maintain gutters and downspouts, keeping them free of debris and leaves and repairing them if they are sagging
  • Inspect your gutters' capacity - after fifteen minutes of heavy rain, if water overflows the gutters, install additional downspouts
  • Extend downspouts at least ten feet away from the house
  • Adjust landscaping and irrigation so that water flows away from the foundation”

Preventing Ice Dams

12/12/2016 (Permalink)

“Proper ventilation, drainage and insulation are the only ways to prevent ice dams and can be achieved in the following ways:

  • Make sure your gutters are clear of leaves and debris
  • Check and seal places where warm air could leak from your house to the attic: vent pipes, exhaust fans, chimneys, attic hatches and light fixtures are all possibilities
  • Inspect, or have your roof and attic inspected for proper ventilation and insulation
  • Look for signs of inadequate ventilation: rust spots, rusty nails or a mildew smell are all signals that moisture has formed on the inside of your roof
  • If you have soffit vents in your eaves, make sure they are not blocked and insulation surrounding them is secured so that air can flow easily”

Home Floods-Drying Out Your House

9/21/2016 (Permalink)

“If flood or storm water has entered your home, dry it out as soon as possible. Follow these steps:

  • If you have electricity and an electrician has determined that it’s safe to turn it on, use a “wet-dry” shop vacuum (or the vacuum function of a carpet steam cleaner), an electric-powered water transfer pump, or sump pump to remove standing water. If you are operating equipment in wet areas, be sure to wear rubber boots.
  • If you do not have electricity, or it is not safe to turn it on, you can use a portable generator to power equipment to remove standing water. Note: If you must use a gasoline-powered pump, generator, pressure washer, or any other gasoline-powered tools to clean your home, never operate the gasoline engine inside a home, basement, garage, carport, porch, or other enclosed or partially enclosed structures, even if the windows and doors are open. Such improper use can create dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide and cause carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • If weather permits, open windows and doors of the house to aid in the drying-out process.”

What is a flood cut?

7/6/2016 (Permalink)

What is a flood cut?  Removing the bottom 12-24 inches of drywall in a flood affected room.

Examples of why we flood cut:

·         If we detect there is wet insulation

“Over 5,000 years of history shows that microbes do not build up a tolerance or resistance to the antimicrobial action of essential oils. The concentrations of essential oils required to kill microbes have not changed during this entire period. On the other hand, current germ killing practices have lead to highly resistant organisms, which require stronger, more toxic chemicals and increasingly complicated disinfecting procedures...in just 60 years.

This groundbreaking botanical technology is proven to kill over 99.99% of bacteria & surpasses the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's efficacy requirements for broad spectrum hospital disinfectants.”

Drying Principles

5/5/2016 (Permalink)

The following was copied directly from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_damage_restoration

“Structure and contents

When working within a residence, it is often the case that those who are performing the water damage restoration must work with and around the contents of the home. This includes, but is not limited to, furniture, electronics, books, and any other materials that may have been affected by the water damage. The moving around of the said contents is often referred to "contents manipulation." Water damage restoration firms often bill content manipulation on a per hour basis.

Contents may also require treatment due to the effects of water damage. This may include, but is not limited to, sterilization, sanitization, deodorization, drying, and storage of said contents. Other contents may simply be unsalvageable, or the cost of having them salvaged would exceed its current value.

Monitoring

After the water has been extracted and any non-salvageable materials have been removed, water damage professionals should place drying equipment according to industry guidelines for capacity in the affected areas. Industry standards state that drying vendors should return to the residence at regular time intervals, preferably every twenty-four hours, to monitor the equipment, temperature, humidity, and moisture content of the affected walls, contents, or other affected materials. Should one area be dry and another affected area still wet, the firm will relocate or remove equipment accordingly.

Completion

Once temperature, humidity, and moisture content are deemed acceptable according to industry standards, drying equipment is removed and the drying process is complete. There are defining criteria and methods to be used for assessing water damage and establishing restoration procedures, but because of the unique circumstances of every water damage restoration project, it is impractical to issue blanket rules that apply to every situation. In extenuating circumstances, deviation from standard practices is appropriate.

Step-by-step process

Though the water seepage will stop once the source of water has been identified and plugged, the problem does not end there. It is essential to determine the appropriate water extraction method, which may range from the use of a wet-dry vac unit to more heavy duty equipment like submersible pumps. Once this has been completed, the process of drying and dehumidification should start. Oftentimes, affected surfaces and areas look dry once the water has been extracted and removed, but there remains hidden water and moisture.  This would call for the use of drying and dehumidifying equipment. As such, carpets, walls, and flooring require removal, drying, cleaning, and disinfecting."

Water Categorization

5/4/2016 (Permalink)

The following was copied directly from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_damage_restoration

"Water, under the IICRC's S-500 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Water Damage Restoration, has been broken off into three categories. These categories are based upon the level of contamination present, or presumed present, in the source water.

·         Category 1 is water from a clean or sanitary source. Previously known as clear water or clean water, this descriptor has since been removed to reduce confusion. These can include water from broken clean water supply lines; clean water from toilet tank or bowl; faucets; and bottled water. Although the source may be from a clean source, category 1 water can quickly degrade into category 2 or 3 depending upon such factors as time, temperature, and contact with contaminants.

·         Category 2 is water with some level of contaminants that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Previously known as grey water, this descriptor has since been removed to avoid confusion. Sources for category 2 water may include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; and dishwasher overflow. Category 2 water can quickly degrade into category 3 depending upon such factors as time, temperature, and contact with contaminants.

·         Category 3 water is grossly unsanitary, and could cause severe illness or death if ingested. Previously known as black water or blackwater, this descriptor has since been removed to avoid confusion. Sources for category 3 water include, but are not limited to, sewage; flooding from rivers or streams; wind-driven rain, water from beyond the toilet trap; water from the toilet bowl with feces; and standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.”

“Water damage is classified into one of the following classes:

·         Class 1 water damage (least amount of water, absorption and evaporation): Water losses that affect only part of a room or area, or larger areas containing materials that have absorbed minimal moisture. Little or no wet carpet and/or cushion are present.

·        Class 2 water damage (large amount of water, absorption and evaporation): Water losses that affect at least an entire room or carpet and cushion(pad). Water has wicked up walls less than 24”. There is moisture remaining in structural materials (e.g., plywood, particleboard, structural wood, concrete).

·         Class 3 water damage (greatest amount of water, absorption and evaporation): Water wicked up over 24", or water may have come from overhead affecting ceilings, walls, insulation, carpet, cushion and sub-floor. The entire area are saturated.

·         Class 4 water damage (specialty drying situations): These consist of wet materials with very low permeance/porosity (hardwood, plaster, brick, concrete, stone). Typically, there are deep pockets of saturation, which requires very low specific humidity.”

Home Water Damage

4/8/2016 (Permalink)

The following was copied directly from: http://www.iicrc.org/what-when-home-suffers-from-water-damage-a-74.html

"When a major storm passes close to the house, the home may suffer water damage that is difficult to repair. There are many things a family can do to begin repairing any destruction, but a certified professional will likely be needed to get rid of any serious health or structural threats. Contaminated storm surges or floods can carry pathogens and become a breeding ground for mold. If allowed to fester, these mold spores can spread throughout the building and become even more difficult to remove. In many cases,  governmental agencies could condemn the structure if the microbial threat is too great."

"The main reason why a home is sensitive to water damage is because moisture is difficult to detect once the floods recede
. Standing liquids can encourage microbial growth within 24 hours and can saturate all kinds of textiles and seep through drywall. Moisture may collect behind the walls, where mold and bacteria may multiply out of sight. If a family reacts quickly enough, clothes and furniture may be saved. However, people must be careful when entering a building that has recently been flooded. Exposure to wildlife and contaminated liquids can result in serious injury."

"Before entering a home affected by water damage, make sure the electrical power is shut off
. Exposed wires or plugged in devices can electrocute people, resulting in major injury or even death. Also, it’s best to move slowly through the building when re-entering it for the first time. Snakes, reptiles or rodents may be hiding under debris and could lash out and bite suddenly. To protect against wildlife and airborne contaminants, wear protective clothing from head to toe, including a vapor respirator, rubber gloves and eye protection. Also, wear thick boots that can withstand puncturing and animal bites."

"Professional restoration services can quickly identify what items in the home are compromised by water damage. Normally, anything that is porous may need to be discarded if it has come in contact with contaminated fluids. These items, like mattresses, box springs, pillows and particle board, trap more moisture than other materials and foster the growth of microbes. A family can prepare for professional cleaning by getting rid of these items before the technicians arrive, butbe sure to properly record and itemize the items for insurance purposes prior to disposing."

"Once professionals arrive at the building, they will be able to track down any pockets of excess moisture and remove them
. Certified technicians can locate these pockets of moisture using equipment that measures the moisture in hidden pockets and behind tile and other materials that may not feel wet on the outside.  When these moisture pockets are found, the technicians will expose them to air by removing any drywall or other materials in the way. Once the location of the moisture has been determined, the professionals will begin the clean-up process that may include pressure washing the area with powerful detergents. These technicians are also able to speed up the drying process to prevent the growth of any molds or other harmful bacteria. If the professional locate mold or bacteria colonies, they will know how to identify and remove the threat using chemical or mechanical methods."

"It’s important for a family to hire professionals that are certified through a reputable organization
. Technicians trained in this area know how to find compromised areas and do what it takes to restore them."

IICRC-What is Structural Drying?

4/4/2016 (Permalink)

The following has been copied directly from the IICRC website and can be located at:http://www.iicrc.org/consumers/care/structural-and-commercial-drying/

"While there are many methods for drying structural components and contents, the “in-place” drying system has been taught in the industry and used by drying contractors since the early ’80s. In those days, this method of drying components, without significant removal of furnishings or fixtures, was somewhat restricted, due to limitations imposed by extraction, evaporation and dehumidification equipment. In recent years, however, drying technology (extraction, evaporation, dehumidification), along with better understanding of psychrometry, has advanced in major ways so that in-place drying has, in some cases, become far more safe and practical."

"Why use a certified technician?
Professional restoration technicians understand the need for quick response. Immediate remediation is key to controlling any escalating costs. The longer the remediation is delayed, the higher the cost of restoration. Certified restorers have the knowledge to test materials and apply the restoration techniques required to return the items to their pre-loss condition. Look for theIICRC logo to verify IICRC certification."SERVPRO of Beachwood, Shaker Heights, Cleveland Heights and SERVPRO of South Euclid/Lyndhurst/Pepper Pike is an IICRC certified firm.  We can be reached at 216-464-4498.

Flood Types

3/19/2016 (Permalink)

"A river flood occurs when water levels rise over the top of river banks due to excessive rain from tropical systems making landfall, persistent thunderstorms over the same area for extended periods of time, combined rainfall and snowmelt, or an ice jam." (Source: https://www.nssl.noaa.gov/education/svrwx101/floods/types/)

"A coastal flood, or the inundation of land areas along the coast, is caused by higher than average high tide and worsened by heavy rainfall and onshore winds (i.e., wind blowing landward from the ocean). Places like Charleston, South Carolina, and Savannah, Georgia, experience impacts from shallow coastal flooding several times a year because of coastal development and lower elevation." (Source: https://www.nssl.noaa.gov/education/svrwx101/floods/types/)

"Storm surge is an abnormal rise in water level in coastal areas, over and above the regular astronomical tide, caused by forces generated from a severe storm's wind, waves, and low atmospheric pressure. Storm surge is extremely dangerous, because it is capable of flooding large coastal areas. Extreme flooding can occur in coastal areas particularly when storm surge coincides with normal high tide, resulting in storm tides reaching up to 20 feet or more in some cases. Along the coast, storm surge is often the greatest threat to life and property from a hurricane. In the past, large death tolls have resulted from the rise of the ocean associated with many of the major hurricanes that have made landfall. Hurricane Katrina (2005) is a prime example of the damage and devastation that can be caused by surge. At least 1500 persons lost their lives during Katrina and many of those deaths occurred directly, or indirectly, as a result of storm surge." (Source: https://www.nssl.noaa.gov/education/svrwx101/floods/types/)

What Is a Severe Thunderstorm?

3/17/2016 (Permalink)

"A thunderstorm is considered severe if it produces hail at least 1 inch in diameter or has wind gusts of at least 58 miles per hour. Every thunderstorm produces lightning, which kills more people some years than tornadoes or hurricanes. Heavy rain from thunderstorms can cause flash flooding. High winds can damage homes and blow down trees and utility poles, causing widespread power outages. Every year people are killed or seriously injured because they didn't hear or ignored severe thunderstorms warnings. The information in this section, combined with timely watches and warnings about severe weather, could save your life.

  • Listen to local news or NOAA Weather Radio for emergency updates. Watch for signs of a storm, like darkening skies, lightning flashes or increasing wind.
  • If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be in danger from lightning. If thunder roars, go indoors! Don't wait for rain. Lightning can strike out of a clear blue sky. Learn more about lightning safety.
  • Avoid electrical equipment and corded telephones. Cordless phones, cell phones and other wireless handheld devices are safe to use.
  • Keep away from windows.
  • If you are driving, try to safely exit the roadway and park. Stay in the vehicle and turn on the emergency flashers until the heavy rain ends.
  • If you are outside and cannot reach a safe building, avoid high ground; water; tall, isolated trees; and metal objects such as fences or bleachers. Picnic shelters, dugouts and sheds are NOT safe.
  • Lightning and Flood Threats

While much of the focus during severe weather is on tornadoes, wind and hail, there are actually more deaths caused each year by flooding and lightning, which are also commonly associated with severe weather. If you hear thunder or see lightning, head inside immediately! When Thunder Roars Go Indoors! Heavy rainfall from thunderstorms can quickly cause rivers and streams to overrun their banks and cause street flooding in cities. Remember, if you encounter a flooded roadway, do NOT drive or walk into it. Turn Around Don’t Drown! Visit weather.gov/lightningsafety and weather.gov/floodsafety for more safety tips and information.”  (Source: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/severeweather/index.shtml)

Does Homeowners Insurance Cover Water Damage?

"You're catching up on some laundry and everything's going fine. The next thing you know, water starts gushing across your floor when your washing machine water supply hose suddenly fails. You get the water mopped up, but a few days later your wood laminate floor starts buckling. So, you may wonder, will your homeowners insurance cover the damage? In this case, your insurance policy will likely provide coverage. Most standard homeowners policies provide protection from water damage if the cause is sudden and accidental. According to the Insurance Information Institute, you'll likely be protected if, for instance, your drywall is drenched after your water heater ruptures or an upstairs pipe bursts and water saturates the ceiling below."

    Ice Dam Prevention from Travelers

    https://www.travelers.com/prepare-prevent/mother-nature/winter-storm-safety/ice-dam-removal.shtm

"You can help prevent serious damage to both the roof and inside of your home by minimizing the likelihood that an ice dam will develop, and by removing one as soon as you spot it. Ice dams can form when water from melting snow re-freezes at the edge of your roofline. Without roof snow removal, an ice dam may grow large enough to prevent water from draining off the roof. This water can then back up underneath roof shingles and make its way into your home."  (Follow link above to continue reading)

Tips From The Red Cross To Prevent Frozen Pipes

    1/12/2016 (Permalink)

Tips from the Red Cross to prevent frozen pipes:
